Conservative led Wiltshire Council is considering its options on the future delivery of its ground maintenance and street cleansing services, with the contract of its current provider due to expire next year.
At its meeting on 13 July, Wiltshire Council's cabinet will consider a recommendation to procure a new contract for the services, rather than bring them under the management of the council.
The council's Streetscene service is responsible for carrying out many day-to-day tasks, including the emptying of public litter bins, grounds maintenance of public open spaces and amenity areas such as grass cutting, street cleansing, fly-tip clearance of non-hazardous waste, and play area inspection.
These services are currently provided by Idverde, with the contract due to expire in November 2022. The council is also using this opportunity to look at how some of the services are delivered to ensure they are as efficient as possible, while still delivering high quality services for its communities.
Conservative Cllr Dr Mark McClelland, Cabinet Member for Streetscene, said:
The services provided under this contract make a really positive difference to communities day-in and day-out, so it's important we weigh up our options carefully.
Our priority is to ensure that the services are high quality and carried out as efficiently as possible. There is a competitive market in this sector and companies operating in this space have the expertise to deliver for Wiltshire residents.
These services are provided right in the heart of communities and we know residents are passionate about them, so we'll look at any opportunities going forward so they can be more involved in work carried out in their towns, city, or villages.
And of course, we will ensure that these services are provided in a way that supports and contributes to our carbon neutral target and improves biodiversity. For example, increasing wildflower provision, using alternative grass cutting frequencies and reviewing the types of equipment we use.
The meeting of cabinet will be a good chance to discuss the opportunities and challenges so that a confident and informed decision can be made.
