Resurfacing work on the A342 Nursteed Road and Southbroom roundabout in central Devizes started on Monday 15 June until Thursday 9 July, with the teams working through the night to minimise disruption.
The work, which will be completed by Tarmac, will see the existing carriageway repaired and then resurfaced and new road markings added. It is planned in four phases:
- Phase one will begin with resurfacing Nursteed Road from 15 June until 22 June, 7pm-6am.
- Once the first phase is complete, work on Southbroom roundabout will start on 23 June until 2 July, also under night-time hours, apart from 25 and 26 June, when the road will be shut for 24 hours to allow deep excavations in this area.
- When the southern section of the roundabout has been completed, phase three, on 2 and 3 July, will move to the northern section, where the mini roundabout is situated. This work will also take place at night, and will see the installation of two-way lights to allow traffic to move along the A361, but long delays are expected here at times.
- The final phase, also at night from 6 to 9 July, will see the contractors will move to Estcourt Street (A361) and resurface the section between the roundabout phase three section and the next roundabout. During these works the traffic lights will be removed, as will the closures of Nursteed Road and Southbroom roundabout.
The teams will not be working over the weekends and apart from the temporary closures mentioned, the roads will remain open to traffic outside of the working hours.
Conservative Cllr Bridget Wayman, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "These works are essential improving the road surface in Devizes, for the benefit of all road users.
"We appreciate some road users will experience delays at times and we apologise for this. However, with most of the work taking place at night and through a phased approach, we are hoping to keep delays to a minimum. We will, of course, review traffic management throughout the works to keep disruption to a minimum, and we're maintaining pedestrian access where possible."
Adverse weather conditions or unforeseen issues may cause delays to the project, but measures are in place to factor these in and all efforts are being made to ensure works are completed on time.
