HRH The Princess Royal visited The Stonehenge School to view the new facilities, watch lessons in action and chat to pupils.
As part of her visit she also unveiled a special plaque to officially open the new £6.5m extension which includes 24 classrooms and state of the art sporting facilities including a new 3G pitch.
Head Nigel Roper escorted HRH as she toured the new building and met pupils including one group who recently won first prize in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) competition for their hydraulic crane.
Headteacher Nigel Roper said: "This is the start of an exciting time in the school's history. The response from the pupils to their new surroundings has been magnificent. The thoughtful design and high quality of the build have combined to create a truly exceptional learning environment in which teachers and pupils alike can thrive and succeed."
Chairman of Conservative led Wiltshire Council, James Sheppard attended the event. He said: "This bright new extension will I'm sure be a great seat of learning inspiring pupils to excel and enjoy their school lessons and activities. It's not every day you get to meet royalty, so I'm sure this will live long in the pupils' memories. It has been a pleasure to be part of this special day."
Conservative led Wiltshire Council has worked closely with the school since day 1 on this important project, managing the design, procurement and construction. The extension has been funded from a combination of the council's own funds and section 106 contributions.
The Stonehenge School is a medium sized comprehensive which caters for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 16. It has been over-subscribed for three years and the expansion provides much needed space.
